Review of Cardiology Department written by a patient
1st August 2018

My experience so far of the Cardiology is excellent apart from the lack of cover on reception. I have great difficulty in getting through on the phone and each time I have come along there seems to be no one on the reception. Having said that it has not delayed my appointment.

Review of Ward 21 written by a patient
31st July 2018

I was sent to A&E by my GP following a telephone conversation with the gynaecology department. I was feeling nausea, faint and in chronic pain with my left side. When at A&E I was seen very prompt and the staff were very good. They did tests and gave me 2 cocodomol and 2 nurofen, was then told I would need to go to EPAU. After getting to reception, I was told to wait in the waiting area. 2 hours later I hadn’t been seen, so I went to reception and they said they had no record of me. By this point I was very frustrated. another hour went by and I was called into a room with a female doctor who after examining me said she will look at my blood results from what I had done 4 hours ago and get back to me and that I needed some swabs done but will come back to me. Another 2 hours went by and nothing. By this point everyone in the waiting room had been sent home except 3 of us. The doctor came back to me and said “oh you still haven’t been seen” at this point I was in so much pain and asked for some pain killers. No one came back with these but a male doctor asked to see me. He asked to access me, he also advised there would be a student nurse in with us. This student nurse looked like she has just stepped out of bed, bright yellow t shirt and what looked like pyjama bottoms, she didn’t look professional at all. The male doctor was a doctor I had seen when I was last admitted 7 years ago following a miscarriage. He discharged me 7 years ago without a scan advising me I had lost all remains, to then end back in there a week later for a an emergency D&C. So I had no faith in him, however he told me he couldn’t go anything until I have an ultrasound which wouldn’t be until the morning. He said in so many words I was wasting there time, however if I go home then I would have to wait to 2 weeks for this scan. He said I wasn’t a priority and I’m not going to die. He could see I was in pain and on this basis decided to keep me in over night. During all of this he spent more time discussing things with the student than me. A miscarriage specialist was in the room and when everyone left I asked her to check my blood test results as the doctor hadn’t told me as promised. She confirmed all was ok except my potassium was low. I was sent sat outside back in the waiting room waiting for a bed for another 2 hours, I then again asked for some painkillers that I still hadn’t received. She came back this time with 2 paracetamol and 2 codeine. Finally I have a bed now. The nurses came over and did my checks, told me my temp was high and my blood pressure was low. I mentioned I was feeling dizzy and sick and they just said ok and walked off. The next nurse came over and I asked for more pain killers, she said all I can you is 2 paracetamol as I have no codeine, thankfully I had some so was told I can take my own. The night staff then arrive and the two african women on ward were not very warm and you felt like asking them anything was too much of chore. They then came over with some nurofen. The next morning. Two nurses came by and asked how I was feeling, I said much worse and last night I had lots of usual mucus with had amounts of blood, they didn’t seem to care and said ok well it’s hot in here and walked off. Then DR hana and two assistance came with him. By the morning I felt worse and told him this and about my mucus and he said ok well then await your scan but didn’t know when. He said I was to get referred by my gp to his department. I had said to him I’ve been with your department for 3 years as I have endometriosis and we are trying to conceive. I had only seen him last month. He just said oh you have endo and not to worry I just need to get pregnant. I mentioned I was starting Clomid in a few days and waiting to come in to Book my HSG but I’m concerned as I have so much pain in my left ovary and he just said ok good don’t worry and he’s a positive person. The next 10mins he was told talking to his assistants as if I wasn’t in bed. By this point i have the worst headache and feeling so sick. I wasn’t eating. The next nurse came over and after my temp check asked if I was hot as in feverish, I was laying there with a blanket, the only one in the room so surly that shows something is right.! Then the nurses came over with more painkillers this time paracetamol. I said my head was pounding with all the different types I get given and they just said well it’s hot in here. It’s now 3pm and I’ve asked when my scan will be for the 3rd time. Within 20 mins I’m having it done. Scan was clear. So 2 hours later I my partner went to find someone and asked what now. A different doctor then appeared. Really unconfident and said well so the scan is fine so you can go. I asked what about my pain, my blood pressure, my mild fever. He said it’s warm in here. By this point I’m becoming so angry. I said so what is causing my pain , he said I don’t know and to take painkillers. I mentioned I have endo and he said it could just be that and I might be getting my period. He then went to write up my discharge notes. The nurse came with my paperwork. I said to her off course I don’t wanna be here but something is right. I then repeated all my results, she said it’s so hot in here this could be why again!!!! I was not hot, I was by the window with a fan and I spend every other month in warm countries travelling so I know it’s not the heat. I then told her my concerns. She said well call DR assistant Monday. Before I left I asked if the blood test I had done the day before showed anything I was lacking. She confirmed nope all fine, I said well funny that another nurse confirmed I have low potassium levels, she said oh yes erm hang on I’ll see what we can give to help that! She came back and said the doctor isn’t concerned so you can go and eat a banana,! Just to point out I still hasn’t had the swab tests I was told I needed by the first doctor on the Thursday!. So now it’s tuesday, I’m still in pain, still in bed and not at work. Thankfully the sickness has stopped. Yesterday I called Dr hanas Secretary and explained everything and she advised she will call me back once he spoke to dr hana. I’m still waiting for this call! I also yesterday morning have tried to book my HSG but the number just rang. So I called 3 time to gyne department to be told yes they don’t answer and to keep trying. How am I meant to book this appointment if no one will answer!!! When I called back to complain I was put back through to dr hanas assistant again who confirmed they will call me, I stated the letter doesn’t say this and she said I know and will find out. Calls me then to advise yes they are awaiting your call and gave me another number. I feel the whole experience was a shambles, staff do not know what they are doing, they do not listen and just blame everything on hot weather outside. You have to repeat all your medical history each time. Surely now days with your advance technology patience shouldn’t need to keep repeating. I’m feel so depressed with the way I was treated and this experiance has put me off going to my hospital, which I guess is what your trying to achieve. People who are not dying don’t go!

Review of Breast Care Unit written by a patient
11th July 2018

I went today for investigation on a lump in my breast. I was anxious and immediately I was put at ease by the receptionist and environment. Then I had a mammogram whereby Laura was extremely professional and kind. Then I went into another waiting room which was calm and actually rather unhosital like which was unexpected and pleasing. Then I had a scan and after that a consult with a doctor called Sarah. I cannot stress enough how wonderful I feel about the whole experience. It took 1hr 15 mins and throughout I felt cared for ... even safe! Thank you to everyone involved. Hannah wright

Review of Angiography & Cardiology Day Case written by a patient
26th June 2018

I had a Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram and Sister Susan Montgomery and Dr L Halmai attended to me. They were cheerful, calm and took great care of me. They also allowed me some modesty which I appreciated. If you are going to have this test it will be fine but I did have a nasty headache for the following 3 days and my blood pressure became high. My own doctor advised me to take pain killers for the headache which I did. Blood pressure and aching head left after 3 days. May I add that Sister Montgomery and Dr Halmai were superb. I thank both of you.

I spent 8 hours in AECU yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the care I received. I knew it would take time while they investigated and was prepared for a wait. I was pleased that soon after arrival bloods were taken and I saw the Consultant once supplied with the results. I needed a scan which again was done in an orderly fashion. And I had some IV treatment. Despite clearly being busy the staff remained calm, good natured and thorough - taking time to explain everything and answer my questions/concerns. And I didn't leave until they had ensured I had not reacted to my treatment and saw the Doctor again to get results of scan and advice on self-care and copy of letter to GP advising on next steps. I was reassured that I was getting careful and considered care. I would like to thank everyone Doctors, Nursing Staff, HCAs and Porters who made my day less traumatic and run smoothly. Even the little things needed to make the wait more comfortable/bearable were attended to: easy access to drinks at the hydration station (people still offered to make us one whenever they came in the waiting room); sandwiches were offered at lunchtime; the waiting room had well padded chairs including recliner chairs and some with leg rests (for those not requiring a bed next door). I dozed in a recliner chair most of the day. I know it takes time to do things but the day I spent at AECU felt like well-utilised time due to the efficiency of staff. They explained everything really well so I was assured they knew what they were doing. I came away confident that further investigations could take place via my GP and nothing serious was going to happen in the meantime and there were things I could do also. Thanks to all.

Review of Breast Care Unit written by a patient
15th June 2018

I would like to say how grateful I am for the kindness shown to me in the last month or so. Such a shock to be diagnosed with breast cancer but I have to say the staff, nurses radiologists, doctors and consultants were fantastic. They made sure I understood what was happening to me, they even remembered that my son was diagnosed with myloma on the same day I was diagnosed with breast cancer. They cared and it showed. After my lumpectomy I am off on the next round of treatment but feel positive that whatever happens they will help me all the way. Thank you so much I feel a very lucky lady.

Review of Endoscopy written by a patient
8th June 2018

My Name is Colin McLean. I had an endoscopy today around 13.30 and I just wanted to say, whilst it is a traumatic experience either way, what a fantastic team looked after me I think Lenka was just wonderful and was so reassuring throughout but all three in the room were, well, just brilliant. I wouldn't go anywhere else for an endoscopy in the future :-) Well done MK

Review of Emergency Department written by a family member
5th June 2018

My father was admitted to A+E on Thursday 31st May at 11.30 and did not see a doctor until 7am on Friday 1st June! He has terminal cancer and it felt like this was a factor in the lack of care and attention he received that evening He also had very poor care form the staff that evening, as we had to repeatedly ask for someone to see him even though he was crying out in extreme pain and we were ignored until we approached a member of staff after 2 hours waiting, who then did observations and nothing else even though his blood pressure was low. He was seen by a doctor at 7am and all that it seemed important to the staff was signing the DNR form and not the care of my father He was then transferred to ward 18 and again the care was very poor with his medication not administered when it should have been even though we told them that it need to be given at certain time and having to remind staff about emptying is urine bag and putting drips up for his antibiotics We were told 3 time he had sepsis and then on the Saturday after a chest xray my brother was told he had Pneumonia?! The lack of care and communication between staff and patients is absolutely disgraceful and i dread to think if we were not with my father what would have happened!? The patient charter that the hospital has needs to be resent out to all staff and they need to be trained in it following it The level of care between an evening shift and day shift is so apparently different that it is embarrassing as the care isnt the evening and at weekends is no where as good as it should be as there is obviously less qualified staff on duty We will be taking this further
